About Highnote

Founded in 2020 by a team of leaders from Braintree, PayPal, and Lending Club, Highnote is an embedded finance company that sets the standard in modern card platform management.

As an all-in-one card issuer processor and program management platform, we provide digital-first organizations with the flexibility to seamlessly issue and process payment cards, embed virtual and physical card payments, and integrate ledger and wallet functionalities—empowering businesses to drive growth and profitability.

We’ve raised $145M+ and have grown our team to 140+ employees. Headquartered in San Francisco, we’ve managed to build one of the most advanced payments teams in the industry, with team members in 25+ US states.

Operating through our core values of customer obsession, executional excellence, intentional inclusion, we’re helping businesses grow for the future by creating the payment products demanded by tomorrow, with the ability to solve for use cases that don’t exist yet.

We are fast-moving, hands-on, and strongly believe everyone deserves a seat at the table. We believe we’re unlocking incredible opportunities that can change the future of payments, as long as we have the right people to make it happen.

Job Description

Senior Technical Writer

Highnote is looking for a Senior Technical Writer to own our developer documentation. You'll set the voice and standards for how we explain card issuing, acquiring, and money movement to developers — and build the tooling that holds that standard as the platform grows. You'll join Developer Experience, the team that owns our API, our SDKs, our docs, and our design.

What you'll do:

  • Own our API documentation — reference, developer guides, and tutorials
  • Collaborate with the engineers who build the API you're documenting, and support the PMs shipping it
  • Set the voice, tone, and style of our docs, and encode that standard into our tooling so it holds across content you didn't write yourself
  • Build and refine AI workflows that draft, review, and keep documentation in step with the API
  • Treat AI agents as a first-class audience alongside human developers
  • Structure the documentation so it scales as the product grows
  • Build a strong working grasp of card issuing, acquiring, and money movement — enough to write about them accurately, and to know when to go ask
  • Define how we measure documentation quality, and use it to decide what comes next

What we're looking for — if you're strong on most of these, we'd rather hear from you than not:

  • 5+ years across technical documentation and software — as a writer, a docs engineer, or an engineer who owned a documentation system
  • Docs-as-code: Markdown or MDX in a static site generator, versioned in git
  • Comfortable working like an engineer — branches, pull requests, and CI
  • Hands-on experience building AI-backed documentation tooling — generation, review, or drift checks you've shipped and kept running
  • Editorial instinct sharp enough to state as a rule a machine can follow
  • Able to read an API schema and write valid requests against it — we're GraphQL, and strong REST/OpenAPI experience is a good foundation; you'll be working in GraphQL from week one
  • Strong writing for a developer audience

Nice to have:

  • Scripting in TypeScript, JavaScript, or Python
  • Fintech, payments, or card-issuing experience

Why Highnote?

  • Build from the ground up. As an early-stage company, we give every employee the chance to shape what we build and how we operate, with impact across the whole organization.
  • Payments-obsessed, from every background. Some of us come from fintech and some of us don’t. We value the range of experience and perspective each person brings.
  • Small on hierarchy, big on growth. We’re a flat organization, so everyone works directly with our leadership team. We’re looking for builders who thrive in ambiguity.
  • Backed by top investors. Our investors include Oak HC/FT, Costanoa Ventures, Adams Street Partners, Westcap, and Pinegrove Venture Partners. Our angel investors include Bill Ready (CEO of Pinterest) and Renaud Laplanche (Co-Founder and CEO of Upgrade).

Highnote benefits

  • Equity in Highnote
  • Flexible paid time off
  • Health coverage: 100% covered for employees and 75% for dependents
  • 401(k) program
  • Paid parental leave
  • Remote work support: a home office stipend, plus internet and phone reimbursement

Compensation

Our total rewards approach is built on fair, equitable, location-based pay that reflects both performance and potential. We set our packages using thorough market research, and they combine base salary, equity, and benefits. In line with pay transparency requirements, the annual salary range for this role is $150,000-$200,000.

Work Location

Roles based in San Francisco are hybrid, and we’re in the office Monday through Thursday. We offer flexible arrangements depending on how far you live from our downtown SF office. We believe in the power of face-to-face connection, so we give priority to candidates who can work from the office.

Equal Opportunity

Highnote is committed to building a diverse and inclusive team, and we welcome applicants of all backgrounds and identities. We do not discriminate on the basis of gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, race, religion, age, national origin, citizenship, disability, pregnancy status, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by US federal, state, or local law, or by the laws of the country or jurisdiction where you work. We also invite you to share the pronouns you’d like us to use (e.g., she/her, he/him, they/them).

A Note on Recruitment Fraud

Highnote will never ask you for payment or bank details, and we never conduct interviews over text or chat apps. All official communication comes from an @highnote.com email address or through Greenhouse.
