ABOUT THE ROLE
The Medical Director is a dual-role responsible for both delivering high-quality primary care in their health center(s) while providing leadership support to providers in their market(s). As a people leader, the Medical Director is responsible for the clinical support and direction for the Providers in a defined Marathon Health geographic region to ensure that we are providing exceptional clinical service across the organization. This role ensures high-quality, patient-centered care by directly supporting providers, managing quality performance and assurance, implementing workflows, and ensuring quality standards. The Medical Director partners with internal stakeholders including Health Center Coordinators, Clinical Leaders, and Providers to align care delivery with organizational goals and represents the organization to external stakeholders. This lead role serves as a dyad partner with their corresponding Director of Operations (DO).
The Medical Director will be a key steward of the Marathon Health mission, delivering measurable impact for patients, teammates, and clients. This role is for the Northeast region.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical Care
Provide primary care to an eligible patient population, including preventive care, chronic condition management, and acute care.
Ensure a positive patient experience reflected in satisfaction metrics (e.g., NPS scores).
People Leadership and Team Culture:
Teammate Engagement: Build a positive, high-performing culture aligned with Marathon Health’s values by utilizing StandOut, Engagement Pulse, and recognition and coaching tools provided to support Provider engagement and professional development. Teammate Relations: Support a positive, respectful, and productive work environment by addressing teammate concerns, resolving conflicts, ensuring fair treatment, and promoting strong communication between Providers and leaders.
Teammate Onboarding/Recruiting: Lead/Assist in the recruitment and selection of provider teammates in partnership with operations leadership. Support position requisition and onboarding and training plan for new Providers to ensure they are set up for success.
Provider Reviews and Performance Management: Participate in and conduct provider reviews incorporating NPS/patient satisfaction scores, Quality Metrics, Utilization dashboards and Chart Reviews. Meet regularly with providers to discuss clinical outcomes, behavior trends, ongoing clinical initiatives, support tools, and areas of concern.
Communication: Primary point of communication for distribution of information to Providers. Lead regular communication meetings and ensure that all teammates are informed of important company updates and are well equipped with information in a timely manner. Communicate with Providers to resolve clinical issues as needed.
Peer Review: Coordinate Peer Review when clinical concerns are raised, which may include review of chart review feedback, peer review investigations and counseling, and remediation support and performance improvement planning when appropriate.
Performance, Patient Safety, Engagement & Initiatives:
Drive awareness and achievement of clinical KPIs (e.g., P3, performance guarantees).
Partner with stakeholders to support patient safety event root cause analysis, solutioning, and next steps.
Partner with the team on patient engagement strategies to improve participation and outcomes.
Develop and Implement Clinical Initiatives and participate in committees.
Collaborate with dyad partner to develop standardized methods of operation to ensure consistent quality and compliance across Marathon Health.
Represent the organization with external stakeholders including potential and existing clients and brokers.
QUALIFICATIONS
MD, DO, NP or PA degree. Completed training in primary care specialty (Family Practice, Internal Medicine, or Med-Peds). Board certification in primary care specialty required.
Leadership experience preferred
Up to 20% travel may be required
Demonstrated thought leadership to articulate and help build an effective and efficient medical delivery program
Proven track record for improving workforce health and safety
Demonstrated interpersonal and collaborative skills
Superior verbal and written communication skills
Excellent presentation skills, confident in all settings with individuals at all levels of the organization, both internal and external
Ability to work and travel to local health centers in market
